End of Summer?

After the long and cold winter we had this year Inthink everyone was hoping for an equally long summer. Unfortunately that does not seem to be the case here, at least for now.

After a week of hot and nice days last week this week it has felt like fall was upon us. All my runs so far this week have been done in cool and rainy weather like this…

I have already pulled out long sleeve shorts for a couple of my evening runs this week, by far the earliest I can recall doing so. Judging by the forecast it looks like tomorrow will be more of the same.

I do enjoy running in the cooler fall weather as opposed to the extreme heat and humidity the summer can bring but I don’t quite feel ready for the fall like weather. At this point I actually wouldn’t mind one last heat wave to end the summer.

Running During a Heat Wave

20130717-233917.jpg

This seems to be a common post at this time of year. The past couple of years it seems like we’ve had a heat wave lasting a week or a but longer. Our current heat wave has started over the weekend and looks like it will last through this upcoming weekend.

In terms of running it has slowed me down a bit or changed the time of day I was going to run at. Although I did not run today I did get out for a few runs during the heat wave.Given the heat I just kept my runs to an easy pace.

With this current heat wave expected to last into the upcoming weekend I will get 2-3 more runs in before we see the end of the heat wave. Since I am not quite into my focused training for the Philadelphia Marathon I will likely to stick to a fairly easy pace for those runs.

Week 3 of Training for the Toronto Waterfront Marathon

As previously mentioned last week was a bit of an off-week in terms of training. This week I managed to get myself back on track. With a run still to go tonight and a run to go tomorrow I have currently completed 40.5 km so far this week.

While I did manage to get back on track in terms of mileage this week the heat prevented me from really pushing the pace with any of my runs this week. Given that it was 34 today and expected to be even hotter tomorrow I don’t expect those to be very intense efforts either.

While I didn’t get a chance to push the pace this week I should have a good opportunity Wednesday night when I run my next race. I am planning to do a 10 mile race. The best part about the race is that it starts close to my office so I get to run over to the start line for a warm-up.

Before I get to the race week four of my training will kick off with a longer run on Sunday. My plan for Sunday is to get back up around the 20 km range for my long runs since the past two Sundays have given me 10.5 km runs.

How did your training go this week?

Changing Plans Because of the Heat

The original plan for tonight was a more intense run with either speed intervals or a tempo run on the schedule. However, as I can sometimes happen due to the weather, I changed my plan just before tonight’s run.

After a short easy run at lunch today I was still ready for a more intense effort tonight. However, with the temperatur still pushing 30C when we went for a run at 7:00 it just was not worth pushing the pace with speed intervals or a tempo run.

In the end I ended up with two relatively easy paced runs today for a total of just under 20 km. I might not have run the quicker run I wanted to tonight but I did get in a good amount of mileage for a weekday.

With the temperatures looking like they could be close to record highs tomorrow and Saturday my next couple of efforts will also likely end up being relatively easy paced runs.   Sunday will also likely end up being a slower effort as I plan to get in my longer run of the week.

With my next planned race being a 10 mile effort next Wednesday night I can only hope it cools off a little between now and then so I can get in a solid result. Provided the weather cooperates the plan is to head out at marathon pace, 4:30/km, and aim to finish in 65-70 minutes.

How has the recent heat wave affected your running plans?
