Mileage in 2013

Tonight for fun I decided to take a look at my monthly logs for 2013 and add my mileage for the year to date. Overall it really does not mean anything. I do not set monthly or yearly mileage goals for myself.

Overall this year I have run a total of 2895.23 km (1799 miles). By way of comparison, a search of a similar post from this time last year shows I had 2759 km as of December 1 last year so in terms of overall mileage 2012 and 2013 have been very similar years.

I did mention that this is something that does not really men anything in terms of my running goals but I can have some fun with it. Since I am only 105 km away from 3000 for the year I am going to see if I can close out the year with at least 105 km between now and the end of the year.

This should be a pretty easy target given my usual routine. I have 21 days left to get in that 105 km.

Closing Out 2012

Tonight’s 9 km run was my last run of the month meaning there is only one month left in 2012. My final run left me with just over 200 km for the month. This is a decent amount of mileage for a month when I did not have any races planned or goals set.

In terms of overall mileage for 2012, tonight’s run put me at 2759.3 km (1714.5 miles) so far in 2012. Last year I ran 3133 km. Even with a consistent a consistent December I won’t match last year’sm mileage but I will still come close to it which is not bad considering the time I missed when I sprained my ankle in September.

Looking ahead to December I once again have no set goals for the month other than to run consistently. My indoor speed intervals to help get ready for 2013 should start in December which will provide me with a little more variety in my training for now but I will close out 2012 without any pressure or plans goals.

January will be a different story when I look to plan races for 2013 but I will deal with that later. For now I will just look to keep running consistently and close out the year on a good note.

Plan for the Rest of January

With no races scheduled for this month and my 16 marathon training program only scheduled to start early next month I have been running without a plan so far in January. Essentially my focus for this month has been to continue running regularly.

So far I have managed to do just that. So far this month I have completed nearly 112 km, or 69 miles. With 14 days remaining in January I only need 89 km, 55 miles, to pass 200 km, 124 miles, for the month.

Beyond that, if I average just under 10 km per day I will hit 250 km, 155 miles, for the month. I think that is a pretty good total for a month in which I was running without a plan. With that it looks like I just gave myself my first goal for January.

In addition to my monthly mileage total, I thought of a couple more goals for myself in January. Sunday I wrote about my first session of speed intervals on an indoor track. I plan on going again Thursday evening. My goal will be to get to the track at least one other time this month.

My other goal involves my longer runs. Since I ran the Philadelphia Marathon in November I think my longest run has been 16 km, 10 miles. My final goal for the month will be to get in at least one 21 km, 13 run. The reason for that distance is simple, it is the distance of a half-marathon.

December Mileage Update

Right now I am still in a period of just running for myself as I figure out my plans for the next year. As it stands, I have only registered for a 10 km race in 2012. There will be more to come soon but for now that is it.

At this point it is still likely I will run the Ottawa Marathon in May but I have not yet officially committed to it. As I mentioned last week, the only goal I am running for now is to surpass my mileage from last year.

I did a quick update of my mileage for this year tonight and I am well on my way to reaching that goal. As it stands, my mileage for the year now sits at 3,017.5 km, or 1,875 miles.  With only 87 km, or 54 miles to go, I should reach that mark by next weekend.

Looking at my mileage totals so far for this year I noticed tonight that another 125 miles, or 200 km, would give me 2,000 miles for the year. That number really does not mean anything and at this point that is still a long shot but if I do get manage to get close to that total later in the month it might give me a final goal to aim for as I close out the year.

December Mileage Goal

Last night I wrote about some of my plans for the upcoming year. Tonight I am going back to my goal for this month.

A couple weeks ago as I was getting back to running after the Philadelphia Marathon I wrote about how my first goal was going to be to surpass my mileage from last year before the end of this year.

At the time it was a very realistic goal and I am currently still on pace to achieving that goal. As I mentioned before, last year I completed a total of 3,104 km or 1,928 miles. As of today, I have completed a total of 2,959 km or 1,838 miles.

As you can see I still need another 145 km or 90 miles before the end of December. With 25 days to go this month I think that barring any unforeseen circumstances I am still on pace to achieve my goal.

If was to average my remaining mileage out over one run a day for the rest of the day I would need a 5.5 km daily run to meet my goal. That alone would make my goal very achievable and would also give me a bit of a running streak to carry over to 2012.

However, I plan on getting back to my routine of running six days per week and hitting weekly mileage totals of 50-60 km. Add in a couple of longer than usual runs and I should be able to hit my goal before the end of the month.

Running Plans for the Rest of the Year

As I mentioned Friday night, I am on pace to surpass my overall mileage total from last year. It has provided me with my first post-marathon running goal.

After an 8 km run with the Chariot today I have three more runs left in November. All three runs will likely be runs home from work so I am aiming  for three 10 km runs to close out this month. My plan is also to try one of the three runs at tempo pace with the other two just being easy recovery runs.

If I manage to get in 30 km over my last three runs of the month I’ll be left with a total of 230 km for the month. It would also leave me needing just 186 km in December in order to pass my mileage from last year.

So far that is the only post-marathon goal I have given myself. I likely will not run another race this year because there are not many options left. I had contemplated the idea of running the annual Resolution Run on New Year’s Eve but that race is already sold out here.

With that it looks like I’ll end 2011 with the goal of passing my mileage total from 2011. I’ll probably start looking at race options for 2011 soon in order to give myself some goals to aim for but for.
