Marathon Profile: Ottawa Marathon

Since the changes to this year’s course were announced this week I decided to profile the marathon I know best. This year will be my third year in a row of running the Ottawa Marathon. Since I live close to the start and finish lines I end up running a portion of the marathon course nearly every time I go for a training run.

The Ottawa Marathon starts and ends downtown by city hall. With the recently announced changes the marathon will now go through more of Ottawa’s neighbourhoods. The course will also still cross the Ottawa River to the province of Quebec.

The course also travels down Sussex Dr past the residences of the Prime Minister and the Governor General on the way to Rockliffe Park which is home to some of the most expensive houses in Ottawa and many foreign diplomats.

The final portion of the course is along the Rideau Canal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as it works back toward City Hall.

While the Ottawa Marathon course was never hilly the changes have made the course flatter and potentially faster by removing some of the rolling hills on the Quebec side and the run up the Heron Bridge at 32 km.

Finally, I should mention that the Ottawa Marathon is Canada’s largest marathon so if you are thinking of registering it is probably best to do so early. The half-marathon has already sold-out while the 10 km and marathon are currently 60% sold-out.

Help me Help the Ottawa Hospital

As you are already aware, I will be running the Ottawa Marathon in May.

In addition to running the marathon, I will be raising funds for the Ottawa Hospital Foundation again this year. Please be generous and join me in supporting a great cause your gift will go a long way to helping the Ottawa hospital Foundation continue its lifesaving work in the community.

My goals for 2011 are to my time of 3:22 at Prince Edward County Marathon in October and to surpass $250 I raised  for the Ottawa Hospital Foundation from last year.

You can follow my progress by watching the thermometer in the sidebar on the right side of the screen.
