Book Review: Born to Run

I just finished reading my latest running related book and thought I would post a review on here for those of you who have not had a chance to read Born to Run by Christopher McDougall.

If you are not familiar with the book, without giving away too much of the story to you, it starts with the author questioning why his foot hurt when he ran which eventually leads him to look at barefoot and minimalist running.

While I found his research into the biomechanics of running, for me the most interesting part of this book was reading about the Tarahumara people of Mexico. Having never heard their story before it was certainly interesting to read about how long distance running plays such a big role for them.

As mentioned, the book also includes research by the author into barefoot and minimalist running. The information is mixed in with discussion of the Tarahumara and the author’s adventures as he travels to Mexico to locate the mysterious Caballo Blanco and to meet some of the Tarahumara runners.

Another interesting aspect to the book is the introduction of an interesting cast of characters as the author travels with a group of long distance runners, Scott Jurek among them, to the Copper Canyons of Mexico to race the Tarahumara in an ultramarathon organized by Caballo Blanco. 

I would certainly recommend this book to other runners who have not yet read it. Whether you are interested in adventure or whether you interested in the idea behind barefoot and minimalist running.
