Race Day Weather

Weather is an important factor when it comes to running marathons but it is one factor you cannot control. With the Ottawa Marathon being scheduled at the end of May race day can end up being a cool and rainy day, much like the weather we are currently receiving, or it could end up being one of the first really hot days of the year. Last year we had our first heat wave of the year in the week leading up to race day.

Although long term forecasts are not overly accurate and as I already mentioned weather is a factor you cannot control, I still do find myself starting to check the long term forecast a couple of weeks before a marathon in order to get an idea of what the conditions might be like.

Tonight I found myself checking the long term forecast since we received a lot of rain over the past couple of weeks. Since we are still 24 days away from the Ottawa Marathon the long term forecast does not go up to race day yet but hopefully provides an indication of what we might be able to expect. Fortunately the current 14 day trend is calling for less rain so far.

Next week I will start to pay closer attention to the long term forecast in order to see how the weather might impact race day.

Do you pay attention to the long term forecast before a race?
