Book Review: Run to Overcome

Since I finished reading the book a couple of nights ago I thought tonight would be a good night to review Run to Overcome by Meb Keflezighi.

With just 224 pages, if you are looking for a quick read related to running this one is a decent choice.

Before reading this book about the only thing I knew about the author was that he had been the first American to win the New York Marathon since 1982 when he won in 2009 and I had seen the clip of him doing the Top 10 on David Letterman following his win.

His story is certainly an interesting one, starting with him and his family leaving a war-torn country and eventually ending up in San Diego and not being able to speak English when he arrived.

In terms of running, one of the more interesting aspects to the story is reading about the use of high altitude training to get ready for races by moving to Mammoth Lakes, California. He was not alone either, as there seem to be a number of elite American athletes training there in the high altitude.

The other aspect to the book that really caught me was the series of injuries and setbacks he suffered between winning the silver medal in the marathon at the 2004 Olympics in Athens and winning the New York Marathon in 2009. I won’t spoil the story for you I will leave it at saying what he overcame to win in New York was certainly impressive.

If you are looking for a quick read and one that might inspire you with your your running goals this is a good choice.
