After a tempo run last night, tonight was meant to be an easy recovery type run but tonight I had a reminder of how quickly conditions can change. Last night the roads and sidewalks were essentially bare as we had not received a good snowfall in a while. Today it snowed all day and when I left work for my run home, there about 1-2 inches of snow on the roads and sidewalks.
It is amazing how much of a difference the change in conditions had on my runs in 24 hours. Last night I had no difficulty maintaining my tempo pace of 4:20-4:30/km while tonight I really had to push to maintain a pace of 5:15-5:25/km.
In the end, I ended up with 8.7 km in 48 minutes for an average pace of 5.32/km. I also felt more tired than I did when I finished last night’s tempo run. The good thing is that I find this is the type of run I remember for extra motivation when I get close to race day. The other good news is that with the snow plows being out all over the city it should be easier for to get back to my usual pace.
