Records for Youngest and Oldest Marathon Finishers?

Ever wondered what the records for youngest and oldest finishers are? I came across a couple of stories today that may answers that question.

First, six year old Wu Chun-hao finished the Fubon Taipei Marathon Sunday. Apparently he struggled with knee pain in the last 10 km and finished with tears streaming down his face. I’m not sure how old someone should be before they compete in a marathon but six years old is way too young. I would be interested in knowing what made his parents think it would be a good idea to let him run the marathon. Hopefully he will recover quickly.

At the other end of the age spectrum, it would appear that 92 year old Gladys Burrill became the oldest female to finish a marathon when she finished the Honolulu Marathon Sunday. If I live to be 92 I can only hope I will still be in shape to run marathons.

  1. Fauja Singh of Great Britain set the current 90+ age group World Record at Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon in 2003 with a time of 5:40:04 at age 92. He is set to run the 2011 Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon September 16th at age 100. (No one that old has ever recorded a time for a full marathon.)

  2. I caught the story of Fauja Singh afterward. His story is an inspiring one. Hopefully tomorrow goes well for him.
